App Restarted

Postby mcewinter » Sat Jan 05, 2019 6:21 am

This has happened several times in recent past so I turned on debugging. While watching, the app closed and reopened and continued to play the channel. Any insight? anybody else see this?

Added: AndroidTV app to be specific

It just restarted again. I wasn't doing anything either time; just watching TV but it seems to have happened at the same time as yesterday.

Don't use my Android box much, but on my Win desktop, I can go to Recorded and start watching. Then the app drops back to Live TV within a few seconds. Has done that several times lately. Once I go back to the show I was watching, all is fine.

This happens everyday at 7:20am. It did happen the other evening while watching a recording. The app restarted on it's own accord and launched back in to live TV. I didn't take notice of the time it happened.

Correction: When I notices this happens, it happens at 7:20 - not sure about everyday but it happened this morning.

Just noticed last night , that this happened on XBox One S. First time I noticed it there. Must be a issue with the DVR Engine.

It just restarted again. I wonder if my attached USB 3.o storage drive is going wonky. I had one fail on my other Shield recently and showed goofy symptoms. But that one died a quick death before my eyes; the two USB drives were purchased and installed around the same time but the other one got hit a lot harder, I'm assuming, because my wife uses the Live Channels app.

Hi,

What time zone are you in?

We are getting diagnostic logs from the recond engine and it doesn't show any obvious issues.

Can you please enable "send diagnostic information" in the app itself.

Logs caught it...

The app was playing until 13:16:27 UTC (7:16:27 Central) when the Android OS informed the HDHomeRun app that it was destroying the video surface. The HDHomeRun app responded by stopping playback (by design).

I think that means the Android app was forced into the background with something else taking foreground/screen control.

I will talk to our Android specialist to see if he has any thoughts.

Does anything show on the screen when this happens other than the HDHomeRun app? What specific Android TV hardware?

No. The app simply closes and restarts into live TV. If I didn't see it happen, there would be nothing to indicate, to me, that it happened. It did happen while watching recorded TV (Manifest) and restarted back into live TV. ...but no - no errors or on screen message.

Added: It does tend to happen in the neighborhood of 7:20 am.

The app didn't actually close - it ceased to be the foreground app, then resumed playing live TV when it became the foreground app again.

Question is, what ran briefly taking over the foreground.

For testing, try disabling all non-default apps, especially anything that has a background process running.

I'm keeping it in the back of my mind that my SanDisk USB drive might be being a jerk. I've only recently added a couple of apps and one had notifications turned on (PlutoTV) while all others are set to off. I'll see if it's something stupid like that. I'm going to replace the SanDisk as I had one go bad in a different Shield as mentioned above. Thanks for the insight.

Wouldn't it make sense to have the app remember what it is doing when it loses foreground and then resume what it was doing when it gets foreground again?
