Shield Experience 7.2 ...

Postby NYPlayer » Wed Dec 12, 2018 12:01 pm

Takes a while to update so if running DVR on it make sure nothing is scheduled in at least an hour.

I believe the time is mostly attributed to the device "optimizing" after the update. It's worth pointing out so people aren't thinking the worse and restarting the device, needlessly.

I had just performed a factory reset last weekend, and had only installed a few apps from Google Play Store, ( I don't root my Android devices, and rarely sideload anything on Shield), so my 7.2 update was smooth & easy, 12 minutes total, including 2 minutes for remote and 1 minute for game controller. It seems "Perkier" to me, with much better remote control response.

It seems to me, most Shield owners who are posting "critical Failures" are either using it outside of the USA market, have rooted and/or other ways disabled features that Google verifies to allow access to Play Store, or, have very unique situations. Not that they don't deserve a stable device or anything, it just seems to me the issues point to that type of usage.

No 7.2 Shield Experience issues that involve HDHomerun hardware/software, or any other apps that use HDHomerun hardware that I have seen. Nvidia has giant sized balls to risk releasing an extensive update a week or so before Christmas, and personally feel their staff are on top of it, responding to issues quickly, and not feeding the obvious troll reaction seekers.

I'm still thinking Shield TV is the best device for streaming HDHomerun content.

I prefer the FireTV 4K since they just fixed hardware decoding... I like the Interface better it shows everything I watch in 1 Place... The only thing the Shield has on it is DRM... Plus it does not have the problem of my surround sound going in and out like on the Shield when I skip … the FireTV does not have this problem it keeps surround sound active.

After updating to 7.2 on my Shield, I am noticing that playback of DVRed shows are choppy. It will play perfectly fine for 5-10 minutes, and then stutter, and in some cases, completely stop altogether. Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

Affirmative!

Needed to restart the Shield (again) and everything bounced back to normal.

And the Youtube "link" on Fire TV is a bit "rigged".

Honestly, I have too much invested in my Shield, to openly say the Fire TV 4K is as good, or better. It's just a stupid pride thing.

+1 on Youtube on Fire TV being... eh. With that said, it works, and I hate to blame Amazon for something that Google is really the reason for. So in my estimation, both devices are pretty top notch right now, since the interlaced decoding issue has been resolved. We live in a great world where what you buy isn't base necessarily on what's best, but rather which things you want more.

I updated to 7.2.1 on my Shield today. It went smoothly and I'm having no issues.
