Fire Stick 4k

Post by rjleurck » Wed Oct 31, 2018 11:12 am

Anyone else seeing issues with fire stick 4k hdhomerun app on secondary channels ?
I am getting a blinking green screen with audio and the source picture or just a green screen and audio.
TCL 55P series roku tv . Primary shannels work fine. Example is WGN Chicago 9.1 is fine, 9.2,9.3,9.4 are not :-(

VLC for firetv works fine for the 9.2,9.3,9.4 channels
HDTC-2US
Default Transcode Profile None

Default Transcode Profile heavy works :-)

One issue that's occurred 4 times. The video will stop (remote client disconnect in the logs) and you can not view any channel, while other clients using hdhomerun app have no problem (i.e. strong suspect an issue with the fire hdhomerun client) . Can only 'clear' - get the hdhomerun app to display video and sound by re-booting fire stick.
This did occur after more than an hour of viewing and did occur overnight as I kept it on.

However, in general for a first time on a new version , good enough to keep using :-)

@Channeldev - will record 60s of the 9.2 for you tomorrow.

Noticed that the video files I recorded play fine in vlc. Looks like a firetvstick or hdhomerun client issue. client is fine on IOS.

11-15-2018 - Latest firestick 4k update has not corrected mpeg2 video display issue on subchannels (480i ?? ) Transcode heavy works fine.

12-03-2018 - mibox s with Oreo and LiveTV works just fine. So looks like a firetv os issue. All day OTA streaming, but after a router update firetv 4kstick could not keep up (pixelation without cause from the source signal, no audio) with mpeg2 stream and a re-boot was needed

12-06-2018 Yesterday Steve W
from Amazon Support reached out to me after my review of the 4k stick. Probably better for you to reach out to them directly at cs-reply+A2BN7KOD2HNXYJ@amazon.com

01-20-2019 Can report firestick4k now can display Channel 9 Chicago subchannels without any transcoding. Makes it a great stick to host the hdhomerun app !

We just got one in today, but haven't had a chance to set it up yet. Going to see if someone can do that now and run it through some testing.

Having this same issue on mine. Seems to be CBS owned channels causing it. Currently on hold with Amazon tech support.

An update: I spent two whole hours on the phone with Amazon tech support on this issue. The issue was escalated to top tier support and that lead tech felt that the problem is with CBS themselves. They said they would put in a ticket with the network and get back to me in three days one way or the other with an update.

Channels app dev here. We just got our 4K stick and are running some tests as well. My CBS feeds are fine, but I would be curious to run some analysis on yours. Could you record a 60s sample and email it to support@getchannels.com? (Using the IP of your HDHR, open http://x.x.x.x:5004/auto/v9.2?duration=60 in Chrome).

I should also point out that shows recorded on channels that are green screens days before I got the new Fire TV device are also green. I have three Amazon fire tv devices. The 2nd generation stick, the pendant style Fire TV and this new 4k version. Only the 4k version has this problem. The other two play the live streams and the recordings fine.

I'll try to follow your instructions and get back to you.

To be clear, if I record a channel that's doing this, it won't show up green on any working device. Only the new 4k stick. The pvr will work on my other two amazon toys.

So, do you want me to make the recording with my phone?

I plugged the IP of my HDHR into the address you gave me (in chrome) and it just times out with an error.

Carl

EDIT: Okay it seems that I followed the instructions for the OP. Can you help me too, please?

It's not a setting on the stick. I had this connected to every screen I own and had Amazon tech support on the phone for 2 hours where the took remote control of the device and could see everything I could see. Any setting that could have made a difference was toggled.

Thanks for the response anyway.

Most of those channels are SD interlaced Mpeg2 .. I wonder if it is the way the new sticks de-interlace?.

There does appear to be something funky going on with the deinterlacer on the new 4K stick.

I don't have the green flashing issue here, but playing any 1080i channel (NBC, CBS) will crash the decoder after about half an hour of playback. Video freezes on screen and the underlying mediacodec decoder instance stops accepting new packets and also stops returning new frames. Several Channels users are experiencing the same problem.

Some reported that the HDHR app is doing the same thing, but I haven't been able to reproduce the freezing issue in HDHR app or Exoplayer yet. Would be curious to hear if anyone else has seen a similar freeze during playback of 1080i stations?

For what it is worth I ran a test last nite with CBS OTA and was able to successfully
record Hawaii Five O on CBS OTA and the playback is OK (have not watched all of it);
that video is 1080i mpeg2; this morning I'm back to the error; also saw it briefly with NBC
but now NBC is playing; initially NBC had flickering screens of green then seemed to sync the signal;
I hope that this can be resolved as I really like the device and remote..got a couple of weeks before my
Amazon return window closes..

I have one arriving today … same here if unsatisfied will return. I use EMBY/HDHomerun DVR so I will see if the problem also exists in EMBY.

Edit Emby played all the channels just fine no green … The HDHomeRun app has a green screen in KRCW sub channels... and 1 or 2 others.

Overall I like it very portable and is responsive.
