Help with W7 Media Center replacement

Postby barry » Sun Mar 18, 2018 11:59 am

I want to replace my Windows 7 Media Center system with an HD DVR, how?

currently, I have;
W7 PC using windows media center, 6Tb, connected display port to HDMI on TV in the family room
Ceton extender in Kitchen
Network tuners; Silicon Dust, dual Over the Air and prime Cable Card (comcast).

I would like to set up a NAS with HDDVR and run it in parallel to my wmc (and then soon retire wmc)

What do I need for;
NAS (simple and reliable) for the HD DVR
Client for the family room (on the W7 pc or is something else better?)
client for the kitchen

What can you suggest?

There is no WMC replacement if you need to watch any copy-protected channels.

There is no WMC replacement if you need to watch any copy-protected channels.
When you say "copy-protected" what does that mean?

Of the 320 channels on my HDHomeRun PRIME most just indicate HD or AVC HD, only MPLEX is DRM. Is copy-protected just the DRM ?

thanks

Hi,

Using a NAS is a great way to set up the HDHomeRun - that way you don't need an always-on PC.

(note - the WDC MyCloud Home models are not compatible, but all other WDC MyCloud models are, along with QNAP and Synology products)

For the family room, staying Microsoft, you could use an XBox One (great excuse to buy one), or upgrade the PC to Windows 10.
In the Android world the Nvidia Shield is best-in-class.

We are working on protected channel record support but it has not been released yet. Until then you can watch MPLEX on Windows 10 or XBox but you won't be able to record this channel.

Nick
