Android audio intermittent audio drop outs

Post by dn2850 »

I have 2 different brands of Android tv boxes in my home. On one of them, the video and audio of all recorded programs play perfectly. On the other Android tv box, the audio intermittently drops out for 1 to 2 seconds every 5 seconds or so. This happens after the program has been playing for a few minutes. Other programs play correctly on both boxes.

Both boxes are connected to old TVs that use pcm decoding (e.g. no ac3 passthrough)

This issue just started in the last week or two. Before that, everything was great on both boxes. I have made no configuration changes.

Anybody have any ideas?

My boxes are generic Android TV boxes. One (with good sound) has a splash screen that says T95X and the one with the faulty sound says "Transpeed"

Here is something that I noticed. The problem seems to occur most on channels where the frame rate is 23.9 (approx) as opposed to 29.9 (approx) or 59.9 (approx). Does that help?

I'm wondering if the "Transpeed" one is using an Allwinner SoC. Years ago Allwinner was notorious for not patching various video decoding bugs. We can probably force software decoding on it. As a test, try installing VLC on the Transpeed box and try to play a channel from the HDHomeRun (it should show up as a network DLNA source automatically in VLC).

VLC works perfectly, no issues at all.

That's a good sign. Let's get some app diagnostics from the Transpeed unit, and our dev team can use that to make sure that the app uses software decoding instead of hardware decoding in the next update:
  1. Open the HDHomeRun app on the Transpeed box
  2. Go into the app settings: the gear icon in the top right corner of the "Live/Recorded/Discover/Tasks" page
  3. Enable the option to "Send diagnostic information"
Then reply back.

I enabled the send diagnostics and then played back a program. This was done at 11:36 Central time today. I believe that I did everything correctly, so you should have the diagnostic information.

Thank you
