Duplicate recordings

Post by NeilinOz »

We are new HDHomeRun DVR users in Australia with FTA, Windows 10 and Synology NAS. Easy to setup and sort out early hiccups except eliminating duplicate recordings.

For example in the Tasks, or Discover UI it shows Episode S13E28 will be recorded tonight and a repeat of S13E28 repeat tomorrow will record too. What am I missing?

thanks Neil

Are you actually getting duplicate recordings as a red dot doesn't necessarily mean it will record and typically won't record the 2nd one when you have such episode information. An exception would be if it is marked in both places as a first airing (which you can't easily see until after its recorded)

Yes I am getting duplicate recordings in the example I used in the original post. Can I access the EPG and determine if "first airing" is set?

Easiest way to check is from the recordings (unfortunately this would require both files recorded and still present) ... use my.hdhomerun.com, click on the recording engine (I suggest using my.hdhomerun.com to navigate there so you know the port as a nas can use "anything"), click on recorded files, click on the series then in the browser address bar change the .html to .json (prior to the ?SeriesID=...)

If getting to the engine is an issue as you don't know ip:port and it doesn't show up at my.hdhomerun.com you could also look at the first "12k" of each file for the metadata if you have access to the file by other means

Many thanks for your help. I am not sure what my investigation results tells me.

The JSON view of the series http://192.168.148.3:40479/recorded_fil ... D=AU237817 has a name value pair of:
FirstAiring: 1
which I assume means the recording task is correctly setup to record first airing only.

When I use MediaInfo for a JSON view of the first airing recording file on the NAS, and then the duplicate aired the following day there is no name value pair "FirstAiring" in either MPG.

Do I conclude that the broadcast station is not providing the information in the MPG to allow HDHomeRun PVR to eliminate duplicates?

The JSON data at the start of the file is added by the HDHomeRun DVR and comes from the EPG data that SD receives from Gracenote. Any EPG data provided by the broadcaster is not even seen by the HDHomeRun DVR.

You should provide the device ID of your HDHomeRun and the details of a recent duplicated recording (show name, dates/times of both recordings, and what timezone you're in) so SD can check the logs and see what is happening.
