Roku App drops back to the channel guide all the time

Post by andydunn »

I can't watch any channel for more than 5 minutes before it stops and goes back to the HDHomeRun channel guide. If I reselect that channel then it starts up again just fine.

Roku Ultra 4660X - with 4.9.0 build 4190.46 firmware
Home Run Connect Duo - latest firmware. Connected to OTA antenna
Both are hard wired ethernet connected

I also tried it on
TCL TV with built in Roku firmware 4.9.0 build 4190.48 over wifi
Roku Premiere 4620x firmware 9.4.0 build 4190-29 over wifi

I can watch the channel on my Widows PC in the HDHomeRunApp and on my android phone just fine.

Anything else I can do to debug this? As far as I know I'm not having any other netowrk problems in the house, other streaming services work just fine on the rokus too.

Update: This is what shows up in the system log
20201113-02:09:36 Tuner: tuner0 tuning 13.1 KCPQ (8vsb:521MHz-3)
20201113-02:09:37 Tuner: tuner0 streaming http to 192.168.200.141:54910
20201113-02:09:37 Tuner: tuner0 http stream ended (remote closed)
20201113-02:09:37 Tuner: tuner0 tuning 13.1 KCPQ (8vsb:521MHz-3)
20201113-02:09:37 Tuner: tuner0 streaming http to 192.168.200.141:54911
20201113-02:10:11 Tuner: tuner0 http stream ended (remote closed)

Not sure why it tunes twice, but as you can see the second 'remote closed' was not from any action by me. The Roku app did that after 44 seconds

Also ran the network testing commands https://info.hdhomerun.com/info/trouble ... acket_loss - seems like a lot of transmission errors. I'm assuming that's due to my currently small antenna. But there's no packet loss. Not sure what the 'o' means

C:\WINDOWS\system32>"C:\Program Files\Silicondust\HDHomeRun\hdhomerun_config" FFFFFFFF set /tuner1/vchannel 13.1
C:\WINDOWS\system32>"C:\Program Files\Silicondust\HDHomeRun\hdhomerun_config" FFFFFFFF save /tuner1 null

The best thing you can do is not use a roku for tv content as they have a &##%^#$# player and any app (channel) must use that player so such is impossible to debug except that for some reason the player didn't like it as It could be network, could be reception and it could even be the encoding of the stream from the broadcaster (and/or provider if cable) itself (note content viewed off the internet that is meant for roku would have different encoding compared to what is actually broadcast)

In some cases having a server meant to serve roku content may iron out what the issue was that was causing issues but to do it well probably has to wait 30-90 seconds before the stream begins.

Edit: since your update... yes you need to fix the source of those errors to even begin to think of using a roku, but once you do, you are back to not being able to do anything more than give it the best you can and hope it doesn't do anymore crashing.

Well eventually I found the COnfig GUI program so I could see the live signal strength and noticed that Symbol Quality dropped out every so often and Signal Quality was yellow (62%)

I moved my antenna around to increase the quality and now the Roku doesn't drop out..

Seems off that the windows and android apps can handle a poor signal but the Roku one drops out without any errors but that seems to be the problem right now.

Hope that helps someone else.

Thanks for the background @signcarver - not quite ready to move my whole house away from Roku and I really just need the OTA for someone to watch a couple football games at my house... what I have will suffice for now. Maybe one day I will get a Plex setup and move the tuner onto that.

Cheers
