Plex Commercial Detection updated to skip commercials

Post by mcewinter »

As the title says, Plex added the option to flag commercials to skip, rather than deleting them permanently. So now if ads are flagged incorrectly the file isn't permanently butchered.

Grid guide, commercial detection. Plex is shaping up to be my main driver.

Added: Another advantage includes remote access for scheduling a recording. I haven't tested Plex in terms of reliability. I would love to hear other people's recent experiences.

I keep trying it but until they fix tuner sharing with other APPS the DVR is not on par with others.... Also it only supports one lineup. Channels DVR outshines the Plex DVR by a longshot.

I'm aware of Channels; my question relates to Plex. You are creating your own issue by using both apps and I'm not paying $80+ for channels.

I also pointed out that Plex only supports 1 lineup so mixing OTA and Primes is a problem. Nothing against Plex but the DVR is just lacking. In my case I need to share the tuners with the HDHomeRun APP in order to watch DRM so Plex is not an option until they fix tuner sharing. If you are only doing OTA and do not share tuners then Plex will work.

That is certainly a limitation but the only advantage for me to integrate OTA is for more tuners which would be negated if SD can ever produce a 6 tuner CC device. I abandon my OTA device as I can't rely on the signal in my area an SD doesn't offer any configurations in order to prioritize tuners in their software, otherwise I would buy an updated OTA device from SD. The Plex DVR is shaping up to be more robust than SDs implementation aside from their half baked DRM solution, which I do not require anyways. The fact that you need two DVR solutions is telling.

I only use SD DVR to View DRM ... not for recording. Channels DVR does what I need Remote access , advance Passes and TVE integration also ability to import Movies and TVShows..... I do like the idea that now you can skip commercials and not have to cut them in Plex. Good luck with Plex if they fix tuner sharing let us know.

Well that's because SD doesn't offer DRM recording. Tuner sharing is only required by you due to limitations of both SD DVR and Channels.

You can't play recordings in progress. That's a dealbreaker for me.

Another dealbreaker for Plex and SD DVR is that since the COVID breakout you never know what new shows are coming on and when ... In Channels I was able to set to record all New Shows in the Broadcast Channels during Prime time on all broadcast Channels excluding News. Both do not have smart advanced passes. I hate any DVR where I cannot record by Actor Genre Type etc.... I am too old to go scrolling through the guide ... rather have the DVR do the work for me.

I thought that I read this has since changed. Certainly worth checking.

Snip... Also it only supports one lineup. ...Snip
Technically this is not true. If you go to a desktop web browser and begin the creation of 2 different tuners simultaneously in two different tabs, one can do two completely different lineups for 2 tuners.
