HDHomerun F/W 20200225 - No free adapter in TVHeadend

Post by njc » Thu Feb 27, 2020 9:35 am

I've posted this in the TVHeadend.org forums, but thought I'd see if anyone else has this issue:

Usage:
TVHeadend - 4.2.8-36~g5bdcfd8ac on a Raspberry Pi 3B+
HDHomerun - Quatro, UK, Freeview, Crystal Palace
Kodi - LibreElec 9.2 running Leia 18.5 using TVHeadend client

All was well until HDHomerun firmware update yesterday to 20200225. Now TVHeadend reports no available tuner for any channel, all recordings fail too:

Setting up a new network in TVH and scanning also fails:

It isn't.

The modulation names changed on DVB-T/T2, and TVH has the old names hardcoded in the source instead of using automodulation. We're looking at the best way to handle this.

Do you have the option to set auto modulation vs. QAM64/256 when setting things up? I haven't used TVH so I don't know what the configuration options are, but in looking through the source code, it checks to see if it's set for auto modulation, QAM256, or QAM64, and auto should work while specifying QAM256/64 would not.

That's great, thanks Jason. Yes, TVH does have that option, I've set it to "Auto" for all muxes and it's now back working fine.

Is there likely a non-manual fix that could be rolled into another firmware release in the future, or is this firmly a TVH issue?

Thanks again for your prompt action.

I'm not sure at this point. There are at least two options, one being that we change the firmware to accept the old names and map them to the new ones, and the other being that we submit a bug report or patch to TVH to change their tuning behavior so that it won't force modulations.

DVB-T2 supports something called multiple PLPs, where multiple different broadcasts can be carried in the same channel but using different modulation schemes, so you could potentially have a single channel that has both QAM64 and QAM256, and so forcing one or the other isn't a good idea because the client doesn't necessarily know which is correct for the actual service it wants. The only place we've ever seen this used in the real world with DVB-T2 is in Russia, and the change was made to lay the groundwork for supporting that in a future firmware update.

My own opinion would be that it would be better for TVH to just use auto for everything. Having just 64, 256, and auto as choices is kind of odd, as there are other modulation options out there. The LTV muxes in the UK are QPSK, and some countries still use QAM16. There's no particular benefit to forcing 64 or 256, so I'm not really sure why it was ever done that way to begin with.

just tried this and it has got about 90% of my channels working again but still a few odd ones not working.
for example cbs justice +1 works but cbs justice wont.
and the horror Chanel isnt working.
itv and Chanel 4 sd dont work but i use the hd channels and they are fine.
from what i can tell when you set it to auto it finds the first Chanel and then changes from auto to whatever that chanel uses and locks it to that and as you have said there can be multiple on the same mux so it blocks the others.

although i may have messed things up when trying to get it to work before i found this forum, i will do a full wipe and reinstall over the weekend and see how i get on.

might be good to compare setups.

i have tvheadend installed on a raspberry pi 4 4gb version this records onto a netgear nas, all in the loft with a connect quarto.
then for the front end i run kodi on an nvidia shield pro 2019 edition.

thats good that gives me hope i have a second raspberry pi so i will try a fresh install on that and hope everything works, then it will be a quick trip into the loft to swap the pis over and should all be golden.
bet it isnt that easy but i can hope.
