Plex records as AAC_LATM Stereo, but live broadcast plays as PLII?

Post by gooman » Thu Jan 16, 2020 4:01 am

I'm in the UK, recording TV shows from free-to-air digital broadcast (Freeview) using my HDHomeRun Connect Duo and Plex running on an Nvidia Shield.

All working pretty well.

But one thing's bothering me. When I watch HD shows live on my TV, playing through my AV Receiver, the AVR shows the audio for most shows as "PLII" (Dolby ProLogic II). But when I play back the same show that I recorded at the same time, the AVR shows "Stereo". The Plex recording file itself lists the audio codec as "AAC_LATM Stereo".

What's going on here?

For completeness, here's the A/V setup:

Samsung UE50MU6120
  • Audio out via HDM1 (ARC)
  • AVR A/V in via HDMI 3
  • Latest firmware
Marantz NR1506 AVR
  • TV audio in on "Monitor" HDMI
  • Nvidia Shield on "Game" HDMI input
  • Latest firmware
Nvidia Shield (non-Pro) 2017 model
  • Wired network connected
  • Latest firmware, HDHR app and Plex Media Server
HDHomeRun Connect Duo HDHR5-2DT
  • Wired network connection to same switch as Nvidia Shield
  • Latest firmware

The PLII indicator is just telling you the receiver is up-converting the stereo audio to surround sound. There's probably a setting on your receiver to turn it off if you don't like it.
