MythTV: DTVMux: ParseTuningParams -- Unknown tuner type = 0xffffffff80000000

Post by Compuguide » Tue Jul 16, 2019 9:44 am

Hi,
I recently decided to upgrade my Home Theatre system from an ancient, but reliable Acre Revo R3610 with a couple of Hauppauge tuners to an Intel NUC (BOXNUC8I7BEH3) and the HDHomeRun Connect Quatro.
The OS installed on the NUC is Xubuntu-18.04.2-desktop-amd64.
On top of this I have installed MythTV (2:29.1+fixes.20180414.329c235-0ubuntu3) - using the Synaptic package manager, (including both hdhomerun-config and hdhomerun-config-gui from the list in Synaptic.)
Running MythTVbackend seems to find the hdhomerun connect quatro and successfully run the scan and find the channels, but mythfilldatabase is not fetching the EIT.
The above error: "DTVMux: ParseTuningParams -- Unknown tuner type = 0xffffffff80000000", I suspect is the cause but I have not been able to find anything about it.

Below is an extract from mythbackend.log
Hopefully someone brighter than me can suggest a possible solution

The line before that is probably more relevant.

Wrong IP address maybe? Usually best to set up by device ID rather than IP address in case the IP changes.

Thanks for responding.
The IP address is correct. I have also reserved the address in DHCP, just to be on the safe side.
Version 29 of Mythbackend only allows the selection of the device id. So the system allocated the correct address.

Have you considered moving to 30.0-fixes? There were major improvements to how MythTV interacts with the HDHomeRun in 30.0 including supporting tuner locking/pooling.

And while for such open source projects the term "current"/"supported" is often misinterpreted, v30 is the only released version of MythTV that has any significant backports (i.e. fixes). There are no known good reasons that a new install should not be fixes/30. Fixes/30 has both the native HDHR lock/pool support, and the ability to use a 3rd party external recorder that provides a slightly different lock/pool and tcp_transport mechanism (which one is better for your needs will vary, but both are far better than v29, in addition to a number of core fixes from v29 to v30 from around 18 months of development).

OK,
I have taken your advice (@jasonl & @gbt) and rolled back my installation to my pre-mythtv installation Clonezilla image.
I then updated the PPA to point to "30" and then reinstalled mythtv (from Synaptic Package manager).
Sadly it is still failing, with a similar error:-
"CoreContext recorders/hdhrstreamhandler.cpp:386 (Connect) HDHRSH[0](12517D77): Unable to find a free device"

As before the scan works correctly and finds all the channels, so it must be seeing the HDHomeRun Quatro.
I did notice that with Mythtv v30 backend setup I don't get the option to select the four different tuners in the card setup section.
The setup does not display them, so I just set up the same tuner four times.
I'm sure it is something obvious I am missing.
Do I have to run any HDHomeRun configuration software before running the mythtv backend setup?

I'm sure it is something obvious I am missing.
Did you read (and internalize) all the release notes? Among other things, the v30 ones discuss you have to setup HDHR devices differently (I am not sure given what you said whether you fell into doing it correctly or not). Like a lot of such projects, one is responsible for reading all the release notes from whatever version you were on to where what you intend to run (v30) to make sure you have not missed something important to you (there have been a lot of changes over the years (you said "ancient", so I am guessing that means many years), some of which may not apply to your use, and some will, but any missing steps may (and do) cause issues for people making upgrades or changes). Oh, and btw, if you are using a firewall, you probably need to turn it off if have not properly configured it for your use case.

@gtb

Thanks for replying.
Yes, I have read and internalised shed-loads of information, release notes, threads, etc.
I assume one of the release notes you are referring to is this one:
https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/commit/57a0ad8

I have been working on various permutations of this installation for the past 4 weeks and pride myself on usually discovering a solution.

I am not complicating things by trying to import or convert from my old system, so was expecting this to be relatively routine - (silly me!)
I am using virgin machinery and software and so the installation should be text book.
Sadly it never is.
I might pop over to the MythTV forum and see if they can help.
Thanks anyway

I just set up a fresh MythTV install from the mythbuntu/30 PPA, added two in Capture Cards (both with the same device ID checked), set up a video source using EIT, then set them both cards up in Input Connections, scanned channels, then went into the frontend and was able to watch TV, and EIT data filled in as I switched between channels. About the only problem I can think of would be if you enabled quick tune it would break EIT collection.

Sounds like you did the same as me (except that I have the quatro).
What machine are you running yours on and what flavour of linux?

I set it up on a Quatro as well, I just didn't bother setting up the other tuners. It's Virtualbox VM running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

@jasonl
SOLVED - (partially)

Thanks for that information.
You got me thinking along different lines. I would not have considered running MythTV in a virtual machine, on the basis that this would add more variables and complicate, rather than simplify things.

However, through the absence of progress in any other direction, I decided to give it a try.
I blew my ubuntu installation away and replaced it with a windows10 installation.
I then installed VirtualBox and an installation of Ubuntu 18.04.02.
And then installed MythTV on top of that.
The surprising thing is that it works!
Now this is not my ideal scenario as my NUC has only 8GB of RAM.
I could install more but would prefer to run MythTV on the native OS, rather than in a VM.

My conclusion is that the problem lies in a mismatch between the NUC8I7BEH3 (which is the latest NUC generation) and the Ubuntu 18.04.02 kernel.
But I have no idea how to resolve this.
