Removing VLC also removes hdhomerun-config-gui

Postby Ken.F » Fri Nov 02, 2018 8:37 am

I want to remove VLC from Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon using the Software Manager but it tells me hdhomerun-config-gui will also be removed. Why would it do that?

Why would it do that?
Because the package maintainer for the hdhomerun-config-gui package for your distro has defined it as a Depends in the control file?

Perhaps it should be a Recommends or Suggests instead of a Depends? Something to talk to your maintainer for that package in Mint about.

I'm not that worried about it, I just thought it was strange. I was cleaning out software but I decided to just wipe it and start over. It's going to be re-purposed as a (mostly) headless server so I don't need any of the Mint glitz. I'll probably use Ubuntu or Debian if I can get my AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 card to work. I should probably try to get that working before I move everything into the server chassis.

If it's running headless you won't need the GUI anyway :). I believe most Debian-based distros have the CLI in a separate package from the GUI, and the GUI depends on VLC because the View button launches VLC to play channels.

That makes sense. Thanks.

Should (likely) still be a Recommends since the GUI can be used without the View capability. But it is (as it always has been) a packagers choice. If you don't like the choice(s) made, build your own package (that is what I do).
