HDHR5-2US vs HDHR5-4K on ATSC 1.0?

Post by xmguy »

I bought a used HDHR3-US for one channel that's requires a separate antenna feed. However but it's not good at multi-path rejection as the HDHR5-4K on the same ATSC 1.0 channel and antenna. If I were to buy a used HDHR5-2US would it be better at multi-path than the HDHR3? Or is this because the HDHR5-4K is a 3.0 chipset?

Typically each generation gets better at such and for me the "4K" has been the best in getting many channels but that doesn't apply to everyone. In your use case I wouldn't even be surprised if an even older model than that 3rd gen works a bit better... the way I like to describe it is the the newer generations work better for more people (where people live) but the older models tend to work better in much more area (the areas people aren't) and I think you might be fringe enough to fall into that category.

What's weird is the 4K is doing way better at keeping a symbol lock on a fringe ATSC 1.0 signal than the HR3 by alot. I was wondering if the HR5-2US would be equal to the 4K minus the 3.0 tuner, or is it the same chipset as prior models?

CONNECT 4K uses Sony tuners. Most CONNECT QUATRO use MaxLinear tuners.

Does this include the non 3.0 tuners in the 4K as well?

Correct. All four tuners in the 4K are made by Sony.

But just so I understand. The HDHR5-2US has tuners made by MaxLinear, as do previous ATSC 1.0 SD units?

HDHR4-2US uses different tuner/demod hardware.

HDHR4-2US uses different tuner/demod hardware.
And the 5 series, 1.0, dual tuner model?

MaxLinear or Sony. Both are latest-gen tuners/demods and both perform well.

I have a lot of multipath issues to deal with and the Sony chips in the 4K work better for me than the MxL in older gen 5, which are better than the Panasonics in gen 4, which are in turn light years better than anything that came before. Caveat here is that I am fairly close to the towers and don't need or use an amplifier so there's no chance of overloading anything.

I agree. If I want great signal retention, and multipath rejection, I go with the 4K and the Sonys. I guess the latest gen 5 non 4K use MxL. So I would get another 4K even if I was just using it for 1.0. Which is 98% of my current usage.
