DVR/APP doesn't work without Internet

Post by zw633 »

Why doesn't the DVR/APP work without internet access ??

So the internet goes out .... no streaming to watch ...... What to do ????? I know I'll watch all those shows that are recorded or watch Live TV. But you can't ...... you're locked out because the App can't phone home. Kinda self defeating.

Seems Live TV should work .... but doesn't .....
Seems recorded TV should work , but doesn't ...
Seems whatever programming info that has been downloaded should record ... but doesn't ......

So much for a buffer of things to do while the net is out. It can't take that much local storage for your programming info when you devote TBs of space for recordings ........ or at least give one a choice to do so ...

Assuming you have a new-ish model tuner and a Windows PC, you can use the HDHomerun Setup program to start a stream from your tuner. Clicking on the hyperlink channel number in the list of channels starts this stream. I use VLC to view it. You can also do an HTTP download of your recordings (SCRIBE or SERVIO) to your PC and play them from your local hard drive.

Once we get the UI more hammered out we can look at offline modes for the viewer app. We might even make a convincing case for downloading more hours of DVR tasks to help out people with intermittent connections, but that's just an idea at this point.

VLC and other DLNA/UPnP enabled clients can also get a list of channels and play live TV. All HDHR DVR installations will allow you to manually download recordings through the web UI as well, but that might be something we can expose with DLNA/UPnP someday.

Ned,
That sounds like a brilliant and necessary addition.
