HDTC-2US vs HDHR5-2US ?

Post by PeteCress » Wed Feb 12, 2020 2:12 pm

I ordered a couple of HDTC-2US's on Amazon to supplement the one I already have.

But they shipped me a couple of HDHR5-2US's.

Was that an upgrade, a downgrade, or a wash?

Can somebody describe the feature differences, if any?

The new ones seem to work for my application (SageTV) and I am trying to decide whether to send them back or keep them.

The HDTC-2US can transcode video to H.264, while the HDHR5-2US always passes the original MPEG2 video untouched from the broadcaster.

Sounds like I was downgraded, but should I care?

What are the implications of transcoding?

- Less space used?

- Better playback to a remote device over the WAN?

Something else?

H.264 uses less space for recordings and less network bandwidth. I don't think SageTV even supports transcoding using the native tuner support though, only via OpenDCT, so if you're not using that they you haven't been using transcode this entire time and you wouldn't be missing anything.

The HDTC-2US has all the features of the HDHR5-2US, plus transcode.

It sounds like the seller sent the wrong product - suggest initiating a return or asking for a partial refund to correct the mistake.
