HDHR3 randomly drops signal/recording

Post by joelshort » Thu Feb 06, 2020 3:50 pm

I have two HDHR3-US tuners on the same local network, connected to a Linksys EA9300 router. I use NextPVR to record OTA broadcasts via all Ethernet connections onto a reasonably fast desktop Windows 10 PC.

The problem I am having is that sometimes recordings will just randomly stop half way through the program as if the signal was lost. While most recordings finish completely, this problem has been happening more and more often and I really have no idea what the issue could be. I don't know if it's the tuners, the router/network or ???

I realize this is very vague but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know where to start troubleshooting. But one reason that I think it might be something with the tuner is because the last time it happened there were two programs being recorded with the same HDHR3 tuner and both stopped recording at the same instant, as if something in the tuner dropped the connection.

Anyone have some ideas of things I can try to solve this?

Enable the sending of diagnostic data in HDHomeRun Setup, reboot, and reproduce the issue, then reply back with the device IDs and the time it happened and we will check the logs.

Admittedly, I may have been using an inadequate power supply. I had been using a 5v 3.8a power supply, but was splitting the output to two HDHR3 tuners. Each now has their own 5v 2A power supply so we'll see if that makes a difference.

I have enabled logging so the next time it happens I'll let you know.

OK this problem happened again last night and logging was turned on. I was recording two shows and both ended 2/11/2020 7:49pm CST. I'm not sure which of my tuners was in use (or both) so both are listed below.

Model: HDHR3-US
Device ID: 10347A41
Firmware: 20170930

Model: HDHR3-US
Device ID: 1036FF00
Firmware: 20170930

It was on 10347A41. The logs show that the network connection between the HDHomeRun and whatever is on the other end of the network cable (router?) was lost. The next test would be to disconnect that device so only the 1036 one is available and see if it also happens there. If so, then it's probably a router issue. If not, then it's probably either the 1034's cable, the network port on the router, or the network port on the device.

Thanks I will do as you suggest. From the beginning I have suspected an issue with the router. Are there common issues with routers that you have seen so I can try to troubleshoot?

The troubleshooting is basically just buying another router and using that instead. I would stay away from Linksys.

Just to update this thread, 12 days ago I simply replaced the Ethernet cable from the HDHR to the router and I have not had any problems since. Hopefully that was the problem.
