No Live TV after migrating to a new NAS

Post by Beerman » Sat Feb 01, 2020 9:37 am

My NAS died and I got a new one. It was very easy to simply Migrate from the old one to the new one and it seems it all migrated over well. Both the DVR Manager and DVR UI work fine. Recordings all show up and they play fine as well. However, I can't get any live tv at all. The Slice Guide and normal screen shows up but the video is black and after a minute or so, the message :Unable to play channel: Communication Error Timeout No Video Data. Then, shortly after that another message appears and says: Unable to Play Channel: Play Start required.

A few things to note is that while Windows Explorer can view and use all the folders on the NAS, it won't let me open the HDHomeRUN DVR folder even though I have changed permissions. I do have another NAS and was using multiple recording engines. I'm wondering if this is where I need to make some tweaks but am not sure what. I'm also thinking it can't see or use the HDHomeRun folder on the NAS and it's temp file is probably there as well.

Any ideas on what I need to do?

Check write permissions on parent folder
Engine needs to be able to create folder for live TV..
Can u record new episodes/series?
Check logs on tuners to ensure the new engine is at least attempting to open a connection
Check engine is reporting some free space on new NAS

Now I'm able to use Windows Explorer to view the HDHomeRun folder just fine though I didn't do anything. But still not live tv.

Check write permissions on parent folder All have write permission
Engine needs to be able to create folder for live TV..
Can u record new episodes/series? No
Check logs on tuners to ensure the new engine is at least attempting to open a connection
Check engine is reporting some free space on new NAS
I have tons of free space. I used the same drives from the dead NAS to migrate over to the new NAS.

The Record Engine logs for both tuners say:
20200201-16:10:31 Recorded: RecordPath '/volume1/HDHomeRunDVR/' (ext) This is the Synology NAS
20200131-23:52:51 Recorded: RecordPath '/share/Multimedia/HDHomeRunDVR/' (ext) This is the QNAP

Here's the logs-there are instances of reported error 807 No Video Data

Re: No Live TV after migrating to a new NAS

Post by Beerman » Sat Feb 01, 2020 10:50 am

So after a reboot, the new NAS does not show up in either DVR manager now. However, the QNAP is working so I do now get live tv. I can record but only to the older, QNAP NAS. There's something missing with the Synology even though now, all folders are accessible. It's been so long since I set them up, I can't even remember what needs to be done but it does look like everything migrated over ok. Of course, the new NAS is not using the same internal IP Address. Could that be the problem or is there someplace I need to change HDHR to this IP Address?
On the DVR Manager at the bottom is says: HDHomeRun RECORD not running | HDHomeRun RECORD 20200121beta1 Linux 9FE3EB3B-44FC-DBB0-F7B3-862433CD0650

Here's the system diagnostics from the Synology after a reboot:

Re: No Live TV after migrating to a new NAS

I.AM.SUCH.AN.IDIOT!!!
I guess all I needed to do is go into the package in DSM Manager, stop the DVR Manager and restart it. That worked!
However, I now have to ask (and to save face that is bright red now) shouldn't the DVR Manager web page do this for me? I stopped and started the engine 5 times or more. Just curious about it all.

Sorry for the long posts but it did help my subconscious figure this out.

Few things here

First,
Synology is a finicky beast. there is something I'm aware of but yet to root cause where folks are seeing the engine not come up properly at boot.
The NAS starts it - but for some reason the volume is not accessible at that time and thus the record engine exits immediately.
I suspect this is what you're seeing
Have a look in /tmp/hdhr_arch_choice
There is some additional debug stuff in there which can be interesting on boot
But you should have been able to stop/start the engine from the Manager UI?!
Would like to see what's in that file above as it gets filled everytime you use the NAS UI/tools to boot the engine ;)

Second
Make sure you set the Max Streams on each NAS. Set the one you don't want to record to 0.. And the one you do to Max tuners
If I remember correctly the 'system' will use the engine with the most free space first until it reaches max streams then move to the next, etc.
so if the QNAP has more freespace than the synology you may not see recordings because, well, it chooses the qnap first

Third
Keep in mind that it can take a while for the 'discover' to update properly. So if the qnap is still reporting available you might have a period of time where things act funny..

Fourth
I see lots of 'no video data' events in your log

Code: Select all

20200201-16:27:31 Recording: sending request to 1321770E at 192.168.1.72 for Live channel 1009 18c381ea
20200201-16:27:41 Recording: 1321770E reported error 807 No Video Data
20200201-16:27:41 Recording: stream from 1321770E closed - retrying Live channel 1009 18c381ea
20200201-16:27:42 Recording: sending request to 132642E4 at 192.168.1.236 for Live channel 1009 18c381ea
20200201-16:27:51 Recording: stop Live channel 1009 18c381ea (result = 0x0000)
Something is blocking video data to your NAS, or your tuning in something wrong.
Looks like is happening on both Primes? (guessing by the number of channels available)

Well it is working and I am still curious but I'm not sure how to get to /tmp/hdhr_arch_choice. I'm not much for porting in and don't see that folder in explorer but if it would help you in any way, let me know how to find this and I'll let you know what's inside.
