HDhomerun Quatro streaming problem

Post by KryptoNyte » Wed Dec 25, 2019 6:36 pm

I just picked up a HDhomerun Quatro on Ebay, used. They indicated in the sale that it was working as intended, but that may not be the case. I have hooked up many HDhomerun devices for use with an antenna, from the original beige 2-tuner models, to the Quatros, but have never experienced this particular issue. Immediately upon hooking up this Quatro, it did a firmware update to the latest, so it now reports firmware version 20190621. The Quatro device ID is 1072FD2E.

No matter what I do, this Quatro can't push more than 9.4 mbps of data through the network. For the OTA channels that run at less than 9.4 mbps, I can get it to stream ... okay. For any channel that would normally push more than that, it stutters and pixelates, and when I view the throughput on the HDhomerun_config, it will show the device streaming about 9.4 mbps, even for OTA that would normally stream at 16 mbps. This was confusing, so I pulled the Quatro and hooked up one of the good old beige 2-tuner models, and it immediately streamed 15.6 mbps with exactly the same cables connected to it that the Quatro was using, however I did use the power cable that came with each unit so those weren't mixed.

I entered the HDhomerun setup on a win 7 64 bit machine and checked the box for send diagnostic information.

Please advise.

Even though the old 2-tuner model is working perfectly, I should probably mention that the stream status on various channels with the Quatro is as follows:

Signal Strength = 100%
Signal Quality = varies from 70% to 100%, but typically always green
Symbol Quality = 100%

Hi,

From a windows cmd prompt run:
"C:\Program Files\Silicondust\HDHomeRun\hdhomerun_config" 1072FD2E get /sys/debug

That will report the Ethernet link speed.

Hi,

The command reported these results:

C:\Windows\system32>"C:\Program Files\Silicondust\HDHomeRun\hdhomerun_config" 10
72FD2E get /sys/debug
mem: nbk=2 dmk=159 fet=0
loop: pkt=0
t0: pt=12 cal=-5490
t1: pt=12 cal=-5490
t2: pt=12 cal=-5465
t3: pt=12 cal=-5515
eth: link=100f

100f is good.

You have a record engine running so content will be bounced through that to give you a live tv pause buffer, however it is showing net errors in the vlc test so the record engine isn't the problem.

Net errors indicate that the client or network isn't accepting the data as fast as it is arriving from the broadcaster/tuner.

Is it going through a managed switch that has flood protection enabled by any chance? Or going over wifi?

I will note that I have a powerline adapter linking my primary network to another room at my location, however, the powerline adapter is not part of the path that the Quatro uses to access my media server. That entire path is gigabit network, a Netgear R7000 router to a TPlink gigabit switch.

Here's something interesting. If I attempt to have the recording engine, Channels DVR on the wired gigabit network, record two high bandwidth OTA channels, it splits the data coming in so that the overall never exceeds about 9.5 Mbps. If I add a third high bandwidth recording, it splits the bandwidth per channel by 3, never exceeding an overall 9.5 Mbps. Everything is unwatchable.

If I select some of the SD channels rather than the HD channels, and the overall throughput is less than 9.5 Mbps, then it works.

If bandwidth or net errors are a problem for the Quatro, what is it about the good 'ol beige 2-tuner device that would allow it to work just fine in place of the Quatro on the same network?

Ah,

You have a HDHomeRun record engine running (no subscription but running). The new model will automatically go through the record engine for live tv buffering. The old model won't go through the record engine.

Can you please find the Windows machine 192.168.x.102, run HDHomeRun Setup, and untick "use this PC for storing recordings" on the DVR tab.

I thought you had it, Nick, but apparently that wasn't it, because the Quatro can still only handle 9.5 Mbps total streaming. If I setup 2 recordings, it still splits the available bandwidth, never allowing overall bandwidth to exceed 9.5 Mbps.

I would strongly suspect something in the path between your PC and the Quatro is negotiating a 10Mbps link speed or the switch is faulty.
What's speed is your PC's NIC negotiating?

I could grab a laptop tomorrow and test that theory, but I suspect there is something else going on here, otherwise the older HDHR model would have the same problem as the newer model.

Everything between the HDHR and the server using the HDHR is full gigabit, and the last time I tested it moving files from one SSD to another SSD, it would run at 110 megabytes per second.
