Please test support for Client Bridge with dd-wrt

Post by SebTardif » Mon Apr 22, 2019 3:44 pm

I'm using client bridge with dd-wrt. In other words, I use an old router to connect via ethernet many HDHomeRun, and that router reach my 'main' router via Wifi securely. See https://www.excentis.com/blog/operation-wi-fi-bridges and https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Bridged

The use case makes lot of sense, because the HDHomeRun is often in the attic, or at least close to a wall/windows. While the main router, which should be in the middle of the house in all axis. Also, lot of people has old router that can have dd-wrt installed on it.

I think it could be easy to get this work all the time if SiliconDust was 'trying' to make it work better with their 'discovery' protocol.

The only issue I have with it is that the discovery is not always working. I even have Plex saying it doesn't see them, but end-up be able to connect to them I try to start a 'live' stream.

Most likely won't happen... such things are the responsibility of the bridge as it is broadcast discovery. Typically such a bridge drops broadcast packets (or subsequent response) but most bridges can work.

It is NEVER a good idea to put the tuner in the attic.

If you're interested in broadcast relay, you can check out these two projects which relay broadcast packets across subnets. The UBNT repo is for Ubiquiti EdgeOS, and the VyOS one is for Vyatta routers; Ubiquiti's EdgeOS is a fork of Vyatta's VyOS, and both are Debian based.
