That was linked from the forum post. It'd be nice if they had an announce list for firmware, though. The bundling of firmware with the Windows/macOS setup software is really a poor way to track down firmware, especially if you don't use either platform. While they do list the latest release firmware on the Linux download page, it's quite unintuitive.

They still haven't fixed the download links on the Linux page yet. I had to guess at what the download URL should be to get the .bin files.

It's the same every time. Silicon Dust wants to be in charge of your tuner and entire viewing experience/ecosystem; the problem with this is that it makes it worse than a root canal when using your own setup, because "Silicon Dust knows better than you how you should be watching TV."

I'm sorry, but that's total nonsense. Updating the .bin download link was simply overlooked, and will be corrected soon. We're working on a lot of changes to help make the website and support documentation, and links, much easier to use. There is no conspiracy here to control how people install firmware...

The HDHomeRun Config source file links need to be updated too.

Well, of course you'd say that!

j/k Image

I've an issue or two with SD, but credit where credit's due: Of all the vendors/manufacturers with which I've dealt, over the years, they're far from the worst. Could they use some improvement? Sure. SD isn't perfect, but they're far from Evil, IMO.

E.g.: Look at one of the issues addressed by the latest firmware release: The issue with some OTA stations. They and their demod vendor had to go to a lot of trouble to track that one down and fix it. They did, and they did so in a timely manner.

I wasn't claiming a conspiracy. There is no announce list for firmware releases, and other than the single web page listing all the changelogs, there's the single forum post mixing all changelogs. There really ought to be a separate changelog for each device firmware, on their own page, with links to the firmware files. Having to try and figure out the URL for the download of a specific firmware file is a hassle.

Also, the pat response from SD about acquiring the firmware files themselves is to download the Windows or macOS installer, which is overkill for a single firmware. (Not to mention that when installing the Windows or macOS setup program will automatically update the firmware for ALL tuners it discovers without any prompting from the user.)

On that I agree entirely. No one should have to decipher the URLs for the firmware .bin files, or any other normal support file. We have much to improve upon when it comes to our support documentation and links.

Though i can think of a few rare cases, no one would typically need such bin files for release versions as the device can update itself (except legacy that probably won't be getting any more updates)

Two cases easily come to mind:
  1. Packaging – For instance, in Arch's AUR: hdhomerun-firmware-bin
  2. Bulk updates – For updating multiple devices with a one-liner:

    Code: Select all

    for d in 12345678 90ABCDEF 13579ACE 24680BDF; do hdhomerun_config $d upgrade firmware.bin; done
Of course, just because the use cases aren't at the forefront of your mind, they are still there. And absence of an abundance of use cases is not an excuse for making those who prefer the firmware files jump through flaming hoops.

I think SD is simply behind in updating everything. The downloads page still shows "Current release: 20180817/20180921"
