Audio drop out on one channel only

Post by jasonmcroy » Wed Apr 17, 2019 7:20 pm

So, I noticed this issue from using the Channels DVR and thought it was an issue on their side. However, tonight I tested this same channel with a recording using the HDHomerun DVR and I am getting the same issue.

It only seems to be happening on the CW network. The drop out happens about every 5 to 10 minutes. I don't see any issue with the video itself and the audio drop out is very brief.

This occurs no matter what app I use to watch the recording. I have tried it on the Shield TV device, my laptop and my tablet.

I checked the signal strength with the GUI config software and I am seeing 100% signal quality and symbol quality and around 88% signal strength.

Is there something else I can check to see why this is occurring?

Please enable the sending of diagnostic data on your devices and watch live TV on the problem channel until you see the issue and for at least 10 minutes after, noting the time the audio dropped. Reply back with that time and we'll check the logs.

Thanks for your reply jasonl!

However, I earlier today did some testing on Live TV and I can't get the audio dropout to occur Live. I just tried it again after seeing your post but Live TV plays fine.

It seems to only be occurring on recorded shows. Will the diagnostic being turned on help if I play back a recording?

Probably not.

Do you encounter the issue if you play the recorded file in a completely separate program like VLC or MPC-HC?

I haven't tried in vlc and I don't have MPC-HC installed as I don't use it at all. However, I have tried to play it via Emby with the same result.

After my last answer I installed VLC player on the Shield TV and played one of the video files and I get the same audio drop there as well.

OK, enable the sending of diagnostic data on all the devices, make a new recording, find the time that has the problem, and reply back with the approximate time that would have been when it happened during the recording and we'll check the logs.

Just for data:

I tried to do a recording starting at about 1:45 PM but today that channel is all over the place on it's reception. Symbol and Signal Quality is usually stable at 100% but today it's not and even goes down to 0 off and on. We're having a storm roll through right now so maybe that is it. Weird thing is that every other channel is handling this just fine. It just makes me wonder if this problem channel cuts out every so often even without bad weather but only affects the audio. I don't see the recordings pixelate normally. However, today I am.

Anyway, I will try it again later after this storm passes.

I began recording Dynasty while it was on going. I started it at around 8:38 pm so there is a little over 20 minutes of the recording.

I watched it just now and I heard the drop out about 5 minutes into it and then again at what I would guess is around 8:46pm.

No reception or network issues indicated. At this point I'd have to guess it's a problem on the broadcaster's side. Can you upload that recording somewhere and send a link to it to support at silicondust dot com, and also link this thread? Might be able to see something wrong in the file itself.

Sure. Can you suggest a good site to do that? I could use my google drive account. Would that work?

The file itself looks fine. No missing data or any errors reported. Is the audio drop you're seeing at 5:10 when the white guy is taking a drink? If so, I get it too, completely outside the DVR, and all of that combined pretty solidly points to a problem on the station's side.

Thanks for looking at this for me!

Yes, that is the spot I am seeing the audio drop. There is one other but it's not as noticeable.

Because of a comment by another user on another forum, I suspected that it may be something on the broadcaster's side.

Again, thanks for looking into this for me and at least confirming no issues on our end and that you are seeing it too.
