From Best Buy this morning:
Good news, Paul. Your order shipped on 10/04/17.

Your shipment is on the way. We've included tracking information so you can easily follow its progress.
Not sure where it's coming from but maybe it'll be here by the weekend.

dumb question - why no HW transcoders in these new models?

turned out to be something that people don't use? or just a tradeoff?

Transcode is expensive - lot of specialized processing power and a lot of RAM (ie why the HDTC is $179 vs CONNECT is $99)

@nickk

does the hdhr5 have the same tunner as the hdhr4?
if not how does it compare?
can you provide the actual tuner chip models?

i currently have 2 hdhr3's and was getting ready to get hdhr4's as all reports show they handle multipath better and drop signals less
i am now far more interested in the hdhr5 but want to make sure it will fit the situation

can i expect the same from hdhr5 or will it be slightly worse since the signal is split 4 ways instead of 2?

also i operate a tvheadend server for my tv viewing
does the hdhr5 use the same driver as the hdhr4 or has it changed and i will need to somehow update my server?

thanks in advance for all answers

Gen 5 US models use the new MaxLinear MxL692 tuner-demod. Gen 4 US models use a Panasonic demod.

In my own early testing, gen 5 is a bit better at receiving signals right at the edge and about the same at more typical numbers. MaxLinear just released the chip a couple weeks ago, so there will of course be further refinements with more widespread use. We started using their products with HDHomeRun PRIME and have a great working relationship with their engineering team.

The signal strength is the same since all multi-tuner devices use a powered splitter to get the same signal out to each tuner that is received.

Gen 5 supports the same libhdhomerun (and hdhomerun_config command line) control as earlier models and should be compatible with (most) existing implementations. Some programs that are designed to recognize specific models instead of looking at the capabilities of the device (e.g. EyeTV) may need updates.

When will these new models become available in the UK?

The SiliconDust UK online shop is only offering the HDHR4.

Any idea if a new 4 tuner Extend type device with h264 transcoding is in the pipeline?
I would pick up one of those as soon as I could get my hands on one.

Here's hoping!
Thanks.

Woo Hoo! I got the email from Bestbuy this morning that my tuner is ready for pick up today instead of tomorrow!

I went and picked it up, connected it up, removed the two Extend units (left the existing Connect model for now) and all seems to be working great! In fact, my tuner signals are coming in even better now with at least 98% strength on each channel that I care to watch and 100% signal quality and symbol quality on all of them. Sweet!

Thanks to the HDHomerun team for producing such fantastic hardware!

Both the DUO and QUATRO are available now at BestBuy stores and BestBuy online. All stores should have the DUO and a good percentage of stores have the QUATRO either on shelves or not far off.

Wider roll out of DUO is underway. QUATRO will be BestBuy (incl online) only until the end of the year.

I picked up the Quatro today, a few days ago it was only available to pick up or shipped to me by the 11th. So happy with it. Thanks for releasing these.

The SiliconDust UK online shop is only offering the HDHR4.
DVB-T2 (HDHR5-2DT and HDHR5-4DT) is in the pipeline for release later this year.
