Reception problems Spring 2021 - SD Tool questions

Post by titantractor271 »

Hi,
I had some great results with a Duo and Quatro until recently. I am periodically missing shows because the reception has gone bad. There was a "Dad we hate your new TV system night" when OMG AFV failed it's recording this past Sunday night.

Below is a sample of my signal strengths/quality to go with my questions as follows:

1. What is signal quality measured from? I am getting Yellow from the Duo-GE antenna and that seems to have most of the problems.
2. What is symbol quality?
3. Should I expect that winter time my signals will be better or did someone start using a device which is giving me interference?
4. Is there any other tools I can use to diagnose my system better?
5. Is there anything I can read-learn from the statistics shown below?

My Duo has a GE Pro Outdoor TV Antenna with a Channel Master CM-7777HD amp.
us-bcast 10 3: 8.1 WTNH-DT
Physical Channel 8vsb:195,000,000
Signal Strength % 100%
Signal Quality % 66%
Symbol Quality % 100%
Network Rate 6.7 -7.3 Mbps
Network Target 192.168.254.13:56610

My Quatro has an old Radio Shack amplified antenna (the wing)
us-bcast 10 3: 8.1 WTNH-DT
Physical Channel 8vsb:195,000,000
Signal Strength % 99%
Signal Quality % 100%
Symbol Quality % 100%
Network Rate 7.3 - 9 Mbps
Network Target 192.168.254.84:42617

Any help would be appreciated... thank you, Dad getting an earful.

First off what frequency is that as it looks like it is about 19.5x higher than what can be tuned by the tuners I am going to assume channel 10 at 195000000 rather than 19500000000.

Anytime you see a strength at 100% there is a good chance you are over amplifying the signal as you don't know how much stronger than 100% it is. I'd also make sure you have an LTE filter to block LTE interference which has been causing overloads for a lot of people.

Also your antenna models probably need a bit more clarification (such as actual model number) as there are lots that have used those words as names.

Hi signcarver,

It is channel 10 at 195000000. I edited the post with the corrections. The GE Antenna has a LTE filer in the Channel Master amp, but the other antenna may not, I am not sure. The GE Antenna is the one showing the errors in the signal. Maybe I need to turn down the gain on the amp?

The GE antenna is the GE Pro Outdoor TV Antenna, Long Range Antenna, 4K 1080P VHF UHF Digital HDTV Antenna, J Mount Included, Weather Resistant, Indoor Attic Mountable, 29884.

I will need to get up in the attic for the older Radio Shack antenna, I can't find it in google images. That antenna seems to work better than the GE Antenna.

Ken,

Thank you for the reference link, that helped a lot!

The new 5G LTE services have taken up residence in the former TV channel band, so they are not filtered out by prior LTE filters. There are new 5G LTE filters available from Channel Master and (perhaps a few left) from SiliconDust through Amazon. At least until you can filter out this new noise source, turning down the gain might help--with the new filter, I was able to turn on my ancient (though apparently unnecessary) Radio Shack amp and preserve some semblance of signal.

I'll confirm I have those, Thank you!

The signal quality needs to be steady and above 60%. At 50% signal quality you will get intermittent break ups. If the signal quality is bouncing around, you may have multipath or interference issues that need to be addressed. Moving the antenna to a better location can often remedy these issues.
Symbol quality is like a light switch, either off or on. If you are losing 100% symbol quality, recordings may fail.

Back in the VHF days, WTNH would get ghosts because we're so close to the mountain the antenna is on. Right now tonight, my signal quality is bouncing between 90 and 95%. My signal strength and symbol quality is 100% steady. I've had no glitches in my transmission tonight... other times I've had problems which seem to be weather and summer season coming up. I just got a new Channel Master LTE filter I am planning to try on the Radio Shack wing antenna ("radio shack multi-directional HDTV Antenna Analog Digital" - I can't seem to find any information on the internet for this antenna.)
