VHF-Hi Channel @ 201MHz is completely trashed at exactly 8:14pm EST till approx 9am

Post by JDazell »

SD Ticket #147865HDVR-4US-1TB
Opened 4/21/21 @ 18:08 PST
No response in almost 24hrs.

Device ID15205D6F
Firmware - 20210404beta1
Send Diagnostics is enabled

Toledo , OH metro area.
Customer Physical Location Lat 41.5878, Lon -83.6958
Antennas Direct 2Max mounted in Garage Attic @ approx 16' above ground level.
All Channels reflect a Signal Strength in the Yellow 68%+ to Green 78%+
All Channels reflect a Signal Quality between 85-97%
All Channels reflect a Symbol Quality between 97-100%, usually 100%

Beginning at exactly 8:14pm EST it is like a switch is thrown and the VHF-Hi channels are stomped on.
CH 11 VHF Hi - 201MHz almost fully attenuated Signal Strength is the same, Signal Quality between 51%-65%, and Symbol Quality is ZERO
CH 13 VHF Hi - 213MHz is less affected Signal Strength is the same, but the Signal Quality % is somewhat degraded ... but still above 72%, Symbol Quality is still 97-100%
None of the UHF channels are not affected, at all.

My customer stated that the interference begins after 8pm and 9pm EST and continues all night every night, into the morning hours.
When I was on site testing last night the interference began at exactly 8:14pm EST.

I inserted the SD LTE filter with no help. So subsequently removed.

At 8:01pm EST I was tuned to CH 11.1
Signal Strength 69%
Signal Quality 90%
Symbol Quality 100%

@ 8:14 pm it was like a switch was thrown
SS 70%
Signal Qual 61%
Symbol Qual 0%

I checked all over the house and could find no devices running, and my customer has no clue of anything in her home running on a timer.

Help Anyone?

How close are they to their neighbors? Some of the really cheap patio LED lights have been known to cause reception issues for surrounding properties.

The homes are separated by by about 100' or so.
That is a good suggestion though. There is a relatively new World Headquarters that was built within 1/8 Mile, over the past few years.

I just installed the antenna and HD four weeks ago.

I may need to drive out there tonight and sit in the driveway and wait to see what turns on at 8:14pm EST.

Just replied to your ticket. If we can get a channel scan when this happens, that might provide some additional clues. It will allow the HDHomeRun to sweep all of the TV frequencies, and we'll hopefully get a better idea from that about what this might be from that data.

Ned,

Following the previous suggestion, I went to my customer's home, with my laptop. I stood outside watching channel 11.1 in an HD viewer Window with the HD Config open monitoring the Signal.
8:14pm passed with no problem.

But ... six minutes later the recessed exterior soffit lights and garage lantern lights came on, triggered by a Dusk to Dawn Sensor. Sure enough the Signal quality and Symbol quality were trashed. My customer explained that they were all tied into the sensor and were installed a few years ago by a licensed electrician. I had her turn off the circuit breaker and VOILA Signal was back again.

I removed one of the bulbs that was accessible to me and it is indeed an LED Bulb.

So ... Are you aware of any brand of LED bulbs that do not generate an RF interference in the 200 MHz range?

Jeff

It's not really so much about specific brands, since even name brands like Philips also have noisy LED bulbs, it's more of looking for key details like FCC compliance testing on the packaging, avoid installing them in areas in the vicinity of the antenna, and if possible, rerouting the RF cables so they aren't next to electrical wiring.

I will search the Internet to see if I can find bulbs which have passed the FCC Certification, hopefully that is listed.

As for the wiring, I used RG6 Quad and the cable run is not within 10 feet of the lights. In fact the bulbs that appear to cause a large part of the interference are at least 20' away from the antenna and cable run.

I just got off the phone with customer support from Sylvania. She confirmed that all of their LED bulbs are fully compliant with the FCC regulations regarding spurious RF generation.

In fact a 24pk of 14.5watt (60W equivalent) are less than $21 on Amazon.

So ... Consider this one closed!

LEDs are frustrating. I live above a workshop that redid their lighting last year with LED lamps and it kills my vhf-hi and vhf-lo reception. This is rf8:
