Low streaming rate

Postby rathmannm » Tue Feb 12, 2019 7:56 am

I just bought a HDHomeRun CONNECT Duo running the latest firmware 20180817. When I choose a TV channel it takes around 5 seconds before it starts playing and even then it takes another 10-15 seconds before the picture stops being pixelated. I am trying to figure out what is going on here. It happens with any SD channel and the tuner status figures are pretty much similar to the ones below regardless which channel I choose:

Modulation Lock tt8qam256
Signal Strength 84%
Signal Quality 100%
Symbol Quality 100%
Streaming Rate 2.395 Mbps

The HDHomeRun CONNECT is directly hardwired with a CAT6 cable into my Asus Gigabit router so I do not understand why I am getting seemingly low stream rates between 2 and 3 Mbps. This happens on Plex as well as the HD Homerun Win 10 app on a hardwired PC as well as a laptop and Firestick. I am really at a loss especially seeing that people tend to report stream rates in excess of 10 Mbps...

Anyone got any idea?

Thanks,
Manuel

I don't believe that is a low rate given the modulation as i believe the content would be h.264 rather than mpeg2 but please state deviceID and/or area (there are different duos depending on location)

I also suggest turning on sending of diagnostics data on both tuner and app, run a channel scan then watch an affected channel for 5 minutes and report DeviceID so SD can check its logs.

Thanks for your reply. I've done this:

Model: HDHR5-2DT
Device ID: 1240E6CC
Firmware: 20180817

Virtual Channel 231 BBC NEWS
Frequency 522.000 MHz
Program Number 4352
Modulation Lock t8qam64
Signal Strength 84%
Signal Quality 100%
Symbol Quality 100%
Streaming Rate 2.958 Mbps
Resource Lock 192.168.0.9

20190212-16:32:46 Tuner: tuner0 tuning 231 BBC NEWS (t8qam64:522MHz-4352)
20190212-16:32:46 Tuner: tuner0 streaming http to 192.168.0.9:41419

Are you saying I should open an official support ticket?

If you wish to open a ticket you can but I think jasonl, nickk, or garethw may take a look from here..., nateb would probably suggest to open a ticket.

There have been a number of issues in the UK with people needing a high pass filter but I believe if that is the case they can see some patterns from the scan if they suspect interference.

Edit: changed low to high (thanks gtb), I typed it in quickly and in my neck of the woods, I usually have to do the opposite for moca so typing low pass filter is second nature to me.

Great thanks - I've already plugged in an attenuator to reduce the signal strength as some people suggested the HomeRun might have problems if the signal is too strong but it didn't make a difference. Will open a support ticket rather than guessing as I don't really have a clue about this :)

Many thanks!

There have been a number of issues in the UK with people needing a low pass filter
As I recall, usually high pass (not low) to get rid of certain issues with (usually close by) HF transmitters and antenna wires (the antenna wire is a nice vertical element). However, there are all sorts of other potential sources of RFI if that is the cause. In any case, I do believe with diagnostics turned on SD can see the issue in their log data at will be what one will be asked to do first no matter.

Looked up the previous ref: viewtopic.php?f=113&t=70697&p=338413&hi ... ss#p338413 but generally wait for some direction after turning on diagnostics and tuning the channels as there are multiple potential causes that the logs might point towards.
