Some followup info. Windows attempts to resolve FQDN hostnames using mDNS (multi-cast DNS) as a fallback when DNS fails. Non-Windows systems will need to be configured to implement a fallback. It also resolves to an IPv4 address, so IPv6-only networks may have other problems resolving this.
