Re: Encryption

IIRC, most cable cos need to carry locals in the clear. Or they can get a waiver from FCC and in return, offer free boxes to those wish to receive locals from them. It doesn't matter if it is receiving DRM from local stations or not. That signal is not the something you received from the cable (QAM ...

Re: Encryption

Hypothetical:
If DRM on ATSC 3.0 survives and ATSC 1.0 gets shut down, what happens to locals on cable systems? Do they get DRM? What type of DRM? Cable company flavor, or A3SA flavor?

Big question:
After the "transition", would DRM'ed locals via cable card work in the HDHR Windows App?

Cable ...

That's not correct on both accounts.

On my PC, it lists Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Digital, separately. AC-3 is Dolby Digital, not Dolby Digital Plus (EAC-3). I wonder if that's why you can't get AC-3 passthrough.

Re: Speaker Configuration

You need to check it using the legacy Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Sound->Manage audio devices-> Select your current audio device which should be your TV's name. Click on Properties button to bring out the Properties dialog. Click on Supported Formats tab. On the bottom of that tab, it will ...

Re: Encryption

One device per TV type ATSC 3.0 boxes have a technical enforcement that prevents you from watching outside your home [mission critical DRM restriction]. Specifically they can only connect to the TV via HDMI and there is a limit as to how long the HDMI cable can be.

We documented, implemented ...

Re: Encryption

Once SD gets the android solution certified wouldn't using the fire tv stick be the same secure solution.
Not so sure about that. I have my Android TV boxes that can playback CableCard encrypted channels for quite long time now while Fire devices can't.

Re: Encryption

Yep, DC market is next to test that. From what I understand, the broadcaster will send out URLs for the shows in ATSC 3.0 signal. The tuner will extract that information out and connect to the URL to receive the actual content. Sounds interesting but I suspect it will be DRM protected to hell (since ...

Re: Encryption

From what I read, there is a way for broadcasters to offer internet delivery of content in NextGen TV. It is mentioned as Broadband Channels, in the release note of the other box which they intent to release support soon (Feb 2024)

Re: Encryption

What are we missing?

If you want to get DRM certification from A3SA, you need to implement everything they told you to implement. You don't get to pick and choose.

Whether or not DRM is allowed in public airwaves, that is a separate political matter that only FCC can tackle when they feel ...

Re: HDHomeRun 4K is Nextgen TV Certified

No, not at all. The video at HDMI is fully decoded and decompressed display data which is not the same thing as the broadcast transport stream which for ATSC 3.0 is H.265 compressed. A typical ATSC 3.0 station in my area has a bit rate of around 4 to 5 Mbps. An 1080p display stream from HDMI is ...

It is much higher bandwidth data stream that must be recompressed down in order to re-disttibute.

Re: HDHomeRun 4K is Nextgen TV Certified

It doesn't really matter much though (a single tuner STB). If you pay attention, no one has DVR certified for DRM yet. The earliest estimate published is sometime in Oct 2023. HDHomerun tuners have a lot in common with those DVR products. And has nothing in common with those single tuner STBs ...

Nothing more seamless than using built-in DVR on the Flex 4K itself.
