Re: DRM off?
But as Mj noted, the stations are probably selling advertising based on the fact that there are both ATSC1 and ATSC3 signals, and when those sponsors see the viewership numbers that show that no one is watching those 3 signals, they will balk at the rates they are being charged. Especially if there ...

Re: DRM off?
I think a lot of people, stations included, have given up on this mess ever being resolved by the FCC or anyone else. TV stations are spending fortunes broadcasting a signal that no one can watch, a total waste of money, so maybe these stations, and others, might have just given up and decided to ...

Re: SiliconDust - ATSC 3.0
The Z Box works only on ONE set. The HDHomeRun allows you to watch TV on a main set in the living room, a small set in the kitchen, sets in bedrooms, on your phone, and on an iPad AT THE SAME TIME if you want. And different channels on each device if you want. Ultimate freedom, just like we have had ...

Re: SiliconDust - ATSC 3.0
People have been asking this question for years, and the answer has always been "NO". It all revoves around the ability of SD's devices' users to be able to watch TV on TV sets, computers, tablets, phones, and whatever devices within their own homes, an ability that has been available since ...

Re: Encryption
Hypothetical:
If DRM on ATSC 3.0 survives and ATSC 1.0 gets shut down, what happens to locals on cable systems? Do they get DRM? What type of DRM? Cable company flavor, or A3SA flavor?
Big question:
After the "transition", would DRM'ed locals via cable card work in the HDHR Windows App ...

Re: Encryption
well that answers WPLG, but WSVN broadcasts Fox and that removed DRM.
Neither station will be in ATSC 3.0 after 7/28
Anyone hear that flushing sound? I think that's the sound of ATSC 3 (Nextgen TV going down the toilet... I wonder when the broadcasters will realize pushing encryption was ...

Re: Encryption
In a recent episode of Lon.tv, he discussed a report from the FCC regarding ATSC 3.0. The report was about the ongoing discussions of the various industry and consumer groups about all things ATSC 3.0. I assume, though I may be wrong, that these are the discussions that SD has been involved in for ...

So, you're saying they are putting on DRM, so nobody can watch their content and pay for cable or streaming?
[/quote]
That's exactly what's going on. This press for encryption and mandatory payment in some form or another began when the FCC allowed TV stations to start charging cable ...

Re: Encryption
Right now I could put up an antenna that is connected via coax to a splitter then sends the antenna signal to every TV in my house and watch when/where I want. This of course does not apply to my laptop, computer, iPad, or phone since they cannot connect to a coaxial cable. At what point in time ...

Re: Encryption
Which is why I asked a while back why the HD Homerun could not be modified so it could at least tune and receive encrypted ATSC 3.0 stations so they could be at least viewed on the TV but not record them until the legal stuff is resolved. Seems like an easy change to me.
Making that change ...

Re: Encryption
OK, let me see if I can get the problem with encryption of ATSC 3.0 signals straight in my feeble little mind. I read the referenced thread and came up my hypothesis: The problem that A3SA will never do anything about is allowing a networked tuner to decrypt the signal so that that signal may be ...

Re: Encryption
The Oklahoma City market was among the very first group to launch ATSC 3.0 and also among the very first group where encryption was introduced. The CBS affiliate, KWTV, locally-owned by Griffin Communications, has never offered an ATSC 3.0 signal. The only station among the five who are broadcasting ...

Re: Encryption
The problem being that 3.0 broadcasts are receivable farther from the transmitter than 1.0 broadcasts are, meaning more potential viewers and ad revenue. In my market, I can only occasionally receive the 1.0 signals, but the 3.0 are rock-solid and stable. But all those 3.0 broadcasts are ...

Re: Encryption
I’d be careful about saying “no by can watch the ATSC 3.0 DRM channels. That’s not really true. By the time ATSC 3.0 rolls out officially, I expect current TVs and decoder boxes to be able to handle the DRM just fine and that will be most people.
We are a savvy minority who want their antenna in ...
