Re: Encryption
In a recent episode of Lon.tv, he discussed a report from the FCC regarding ATSC 3.0. The report was about the ongoing discussions of the various industry and consumer groups about all things ATSC 3.0. I assume, though I may be wrong, that these are the discussions that SD has been involved in for ...

So, you're saying they are putting on DRM, so nobody can watch their content and pay for cable or streaming?
[/quote]
That's exactly what's going on. This press for encryption and mandatory payment in some form or another began when the FCC allowed TV stations to start charging cable ...

Re: Encryption
Right now I could put up an antenna that is connected via coax to a splitter then sends the antenna signal to every TV in my house and watch when/where I want. This of course does not apply to my laptop, computer, iPad, or phone since they cannot connect to a coaxial cable. At what point in time ...

Re: Encryption
Great news! WNDU channel 16 is now broadcasting in HDR!

However a few days after their channel became available on ATSC 3, they turned on DRM. I emailed them telling them that DRM ...

Re: Encryption
Which is why I asked a while back why the HD Homerun could not be modified so it could at least tune and receive encrypted ATSC 3.0 stations so they could be at least viewed on the TV but not record them until the legal stuff is resolved. Seems like an easy change to me.
Making that change ...

Re: Encryption
OK, let me see if I can get the problem with encryption of ATSC 3.0 signals straight in my feeble little mind. I read the referenced thread and came up my hypothesis: The problem that A3SA will never do anything about is allowing a networked tuner to decrypt the signal so that that signal may be ...

Re: Encryption
The Oklahoma City market was among the very first group to launch ATSC 3.0 and also among the very first group where encryption was introduced. The CBS affiliate, KWTV, locally-owned by Griffin Communications, has never offered an ATSC 3.0 signal. The only station among the five who are broadcasting ...

Re: Encryption
The problem being that 3.0 broadcasts are receivable farther from the transmitter than 1.0 broadcasts are, meaning more potential viewers and ad revenue. In my market, I can only occasionally receive the 1.0 signals, but the 3.0 are rock-solid and stable. But all those 3.0 broadcasts are ...

Re: Encryption
I’d be careful about saying “no by can watch the ATSC 3.0 DRM channels. That’s not really true. By the time ATSC 3.0 rolls out officially, I expect current TVs and decoder boxes to be able to handle the DRM just fine and that will be most people.
We are a savvy minority who want their antenna in ...

Re: Encryption
I think a3sa will be killed by greed and shortsightedness.
People won't be able to watch those channels, and that's that. No ad revenue for station, they will turn DRM off.
In my market this is the only ATSC 3.0 station with DRM, and of course they have it on ATSC 1.0 too...
The problem being ...

Re: Encryption
So since ATSC 3.0 isn’t officially rolled out and they’ve demonstrated that DRM denies access to stations using it and since ATSC 1.0 is basically the same content, they should agree to turn it off on the transmissions now that the test was successful and turn it back on, if they must, when they ...

Re: Encryption
To my eyes, the ATSC 3.0 version, while NOT 4K, is a better picture than the 1.0 version.
Probably many variables are involved, but in the Indianapolis market, that appears to be the case.
It is a better picture than 1.0 in my opinion. I only have one 3.0 signal available to watch in my area ...

Re: Encryption
I agree, but I do not see where we, the consumers, have any leverage with the broadcasters or anyone else. It would be nice if some powerful congressman on the Oversight Committee could pickup this issue and hammer the FCC. They have the power to regulate this stuff. I addressed the issue to my ...

Re: Encryption
A quick side note: I got an LTE filter for my antenna and I am now able to watch a few of the ATSC 1.0 channels, and the 3 unencrypted ATSC 3.0 channels are still perfectly stable at 70 miles distance. The ones that are encrypted are available on ATSC 1.0 so I'm good for a while until such time as ...
