Secondary HDHR Connect for On-The-Road

I currently have an HDHR Connect Quatro installed in my house, and a Premium subscription. Works great within the walls of my house. I've been thinking of buying a second Connect that I can take on the road with me. If I plug it into any available LAN that has Internet access, and don't hook up the ...

Re: record in one city view in another

Have a look at https://getchannels.com/

They have their own live and DVR software that works a lot like the HDHR software. The big difference being that their DVR has a feature that allows you to watch saved content when away from home.

Downloads: App vs. Software

On the HDHR downloads page, https://www.silicondust.com/support/downloads/, what is the difference between the "HDHomeRun App for XXX" and the "HDHomeRun Software for XXX" downloads?

Re: Basic needs setup

I've been thinking about giving Channels a try. According to their website, if you pay the $8/mo DVR subscription, you can get the apps for free on every platform. Not sure how they manage that, because the apps have a fixed cost in the various app stores. Perhaps they credit back the $25 on the DVR...

Re: Fast Forward...

Thanks for the help.

I also poked around in the FAQ thread and found instructions.

The part that was not intuitively obvious to me was that the up/down to skip forward/back only works if the GUI is not displayed (if the GUI is displayed, left/right/up/down are for navigating the GUI).

Fast Forward...

I can't seem to figure out how to fast forward in the HDHR app except to repeatedly hit the ">>" button to jump 30 seconds at a time. It takes an awful lot of presses of the ">>" button to jump past the first hour of a 2 hour recording. This limitation seems to affect the Windows, iOS, and Android/F...

Re: Setting Up Two TVs On The Duo

Take a look at the diagram from the hdhomerun webpage. Hopefully should make clear how they intend it to be used.

Re: Connecting different brands of HDTVs to HD Homerun?

I am thinking that I am better off just buying a distribution amplifier/splitter in my case since all I want to do is watch live channels and split the signal on my LAN without having to run/terminate RG-6 cables in my house. My Samsung TV and Samsung Blu-ray player both have built-in DLNA support ...

Re: Connecting different brands of HDTVs to HD Homerun?

You will need a device capable of using that APP, cheapest I believe is the Firestick. Id go up to at least the FireTV dongle or the FireTV 4K stick or even the Cube if you go with FireTV devices. There's a known bug with the 4k Fire Stick and certain broadcast TV source material. If I were going t...

Re: Transcode DVR Recordings on Disk?

I played around with transcoding a recording or 2 from MPEG-2 to H.264. I was not pleased with the results, so I decided not to pursue the idea further.

Instead, I swapped out my 4k Fire Stick for an older, non-4K Fire Stick. That seems to have solved my issues, for now.

Re: Transcode DVR Recordings on Disk?

I suppose another option here would be to swap out my HDHR Connect for an HDHR Extend? That transcodes everything to H.264 doesn't it? Does that results in DVR files on disk being H.264 as well? Is there a compromise in PQ since the transcoding happens in real-time?

Re: Transcode DVR Recordings on Disk?

The metadata is in the first 12032 bytes of the recording file. After you edit or transcode a recording you can copy the metadata from the original file and combine it with the edited file with dd and cat. Linux terminal doesn't like spaces in file names, and since I'm too lazy to type out long fil...

Re: Transcode DVR Recordings on Disk?

My DVR server is Linux, so I'd most likely use cron to run a script every so often that looks for new recordings in the HDHR DVR directory and then transcodes them with ffmpeg or the VLC command-line interface. I have also shared my HDHR DVR directory via miniDLNA, so I can watch DVR'd content as-is...

Re: Transcode DVR Recordings on Disk?

AFAIK the issue with 4K Fire TV Stick was primarily the deinterlacer with MPEG2 Interesting. I hadn't quite picked up on the progressive/interlaced aspect of the Fire Stick 4K bug. That would explain why I can watch some content without issue, but other content is flaky. I was under the impression ...

Transcode DVR Recordings on Disk?

I had a few frustrating bouts of the HDHR app freezing and/or crashing on my 4K Fire TV Stick last night while watching a couple of DVR recordings. I was able to recover it for the most part (without rebooting the Fire Stick) by restarting the HDHR app and playing a few seconds of live TV before goi...
