One approach would be to configure the NAS with two volumes, one for DVR recordings and one for general storage. Set the size of the DVR volume to 4TB.

You get audio using the Roku Media Player app with the HDHomeRun but not when using the HDHomeRun app?

Quick one first - you can turn off Slice guide in the app settings menu. If you do that pressing UP or DOWN will take you immediately to the grid guide.

I can check the diagnostic logs... can you please run HDHomeRun Setup, tick "send diagnostic information" on the Advanced tab, sign out, sign back in, then let me know the Device ID of your HDHomeRun.

The HDHomeRun DVR works with FireTV and the FireTV remote. It doesn't do thumbnails.... instead it has a near-instant 30s skip forward and 10s skip back so you can move around and find where you want to go quickly.

We haven't been able to reproduce the problem you are seeing but the next release in the works does a much better job of catching and displaying error information rather than simply exiting. The DVR record engine running on your Mac is too old for the Roku app to be able to use it. In theory we could make the app ignore the out-of-date record engine but that would confuse people who expect to see their recordings on Roku. The error message is correct - you have a old DVR record engine installed on your Mac that hasn't been updated for 5 years. Option 1 is to install the latest HDHomeRun software on your Mac including the DVR feature. Option 2 is to uninstall the DVR record engine from your Mac if you are not using it...

It looks to be a fault in the broadcast. The only thing you can really do is call the TV station to let them know... hopefully they will fix it.
